How training works

Your pathway, step by step

1

Get in touch

Submit your application and we'll pair you with a local volunteer tutor.

2

Assessment drive

An informal drive so your tutor understands your current standard.

3

Coaching sessions

Regular sessions in your own car, at your own pace, focused on the system of car control.

4

RoSPA test

When you're ready, take your advanced test with a RoSPA examiner and earn your grade.

Costs

It's £65 to join. Annual club membership is £20, due each April. A small contribution towards your tutor's fuel is agreed directly with them at your first session. Once you pass your advanced test there's also a yearly fee payable to RoSPA, in addition to your annual club subscription.

Eligibility

You need a full UK driving licence and access to a roadworthy, insured vehicle. All abilities are welcome — from newly qualified drivers to those returning after many years.

Before you drive

Driver checks & the cockpit drill

Every drive should start with a quick, methodical routine. The cockpit drill — DSSSM — sets you up for safety and full control before you move off.

D
Doors

All doors closed and secure before moving off.

S
Seat

Seat, backrest and head restraint adjusted so you can reach the pedals and controls comfortably.

S
Steering

Set reach and height so your hands rest on the wheel with a slight bend at the elbow.

S
Seatbelt

Belt on, correctly routed and not twisted — and check your passengers are belted too.

M
Mirrors

Interior and both door mirrors adjusted for the best all-round view.

Under-bonnet & walk-round — POWER

A regular POWER check keeps your car roadworthy between services:

P — Petrol / fuel
O — Oil level
W — Water / coolant
E — Electrics & lights
R — Rubber (tyres)
